DID YOU KNOW? -  St. Patrick’s School is equipped with 4 servers, 19 Mimos, 22 projectors, 1 Smart board, 40 laptops in the mobile computer lab, along with an average of 5 desktop computers per classroom in the lower grades and 10 or more in the upper grades.  Every teacher has a computer at his or her desk. All this technology enhances the educational experience of every student as well as prepares them with the skills they will need at the high school level. This has happened due to the generous donations of groups such as Home & School and Athletic Committee.

INFORMATION ON THE NEW BUILDING PROGRESS –The steel beams arrived and the progress continues on our new addition to St. Patrick’s School. But let me add a cautionary note from Father Ron: “Although we have been successful enough to begin construction, the only way for construction to continue is for our capital campaign to meet or exceed our goal of $3.8 million. If everyone continues to consider pledging a sacrificial gift when you are contacted by a campaign volunteer, we’ll be able to finish construction.”  Please continue to pray for this success. As the progression continues to evolve, you can find updated pictures of the progress on the school website www.stpatselkhorn.org.

THE EXCELLENT 11 - What is this new group called the "Excellent 11"? "Passion is why teachers teach and why parents devote their lives to raising their children." - Ron Clark Have you ever met someone who has made a difference in your life?  The staff and students of St. Patricks hope to do just that with our new group called the Excellent 11. A group of 11 students will be using skits to portray how we can all help others to make a difference.  Their inspiration was sparked by the truly tremendous teacher and author, Ron Clark.   Ron Clark is a person who used every quality given to him by God to impact the lives of many students, teachers and parents.  Qualities that need to be shared with others to help reach those dreams, believe no aspiration is too high or no goal is unattainable.  The excellent 11 qualities that our staff and students will be working on this year are:  enthusiasm, adventure, creativity, reflection, balance, compassion, confidence, humor, common sense, appreciation, and resilience.  “These are qualities shared by children who love to learn – and they’re also the qualities found in teachers and parents who know how to bring out the joy of learning in any child.”  The staff and students of St. Patrick’s are so excited to share qualities through action.

FALL PARENT / TEACHER CONFERENCE - Sign-up sheets are in between the front doors of the school for parent/teacher conferences. Please sign up for appointments if your child is in PreS through 5th grade with your child’s homeroom teacher. This is a great time to receive feedback and ask questions to teachers on how your child is performing in school. The times available are as follows:

PreS 2 Day Tuesday, October 16th                        8:00am – 3:00pm

PreK 3 day Tuesday, October 16th                        4:00pm – 7:00pm

PreK 3 Day Wednesday, October 17th                   8:00am – 3:00pm

PreS 2 day Thursday, October 18th                       8:00am – 3:00pm

K – 8th Grades Thursday, October 18th                  8:00am – 8:30pm

6th – 8th grade parents will conference with their child’s teacher/s, individually in the Parish Center. No appointment is needed.   It is requested that you look over your child’s report card upon arrival, and find your child’s homeroom teacher and any other teachers you wish to speak to. Spanish, PE, and Music teachers will also be there as well.  Mrs. Kalkowski, the librarian, will be in the library to answer any questions that parents may have.  They will break for lunch at 11:30 until Noon and for dinner 5:30 until 6:00.

ART MISSION AT ST. PATRICK’S FOR ’07-’08- The art committee at St. Patrick’s is excited to share their plans for the 2007-2008 school year. This year each classroom will have the opportunity to explore the basic concepts of art including: color, line, form, and texture. The first concept, color, will be taught during the months of October and November while the students focus on the work and technique of Georges Seurat. If you share a passion for art and are interested in volunteering in your child’s classroom to assist the teacher sometime this year during art class, please contact Betsy Ramm at 359-1324.

October/November- Color

December/January- Line

February/March- Form using multicultural art

April/May- Texture

PICTURE RETAKES – Life Touch will be here on Tuesday, October 23rd for school picture retakes. Picture retakes may be for any of the following reasons:

          ● If you are unhappy with your child’s first picture after viewing it.

          ● If you forgot to turn in your order envelope when picture taking was first held.

          ● If your child was absent on the day pictures were taken.

          ● If you have changed your mind and wish to purchase your child’s pictures.

If you will be getting retakes because you are unpleased with your initial pictures, you will just need to return your picture packet as your reorder.  If you are taking pictures for the first time on this retake visit, you will need to come into the school office the get a picture envelope, fill that out and attach the money, and then return that with your child.  The fall picture will be used for the yearbook.  School uniforms with sweaters is the dress code.

STUDENT COUNCIL UPCOMING PROJECTS- On Wednesday, October 17, the student council is sponsoring a muffin sell.  They are selling the delectable muffins from Mimi’s Café for $1 each.  All money raised from this fundraiser is used to sponsor our various charitable activities throughout the school year.

On Thursday, October 18 the student council is hosting a bake sale from 9 – 5 during the parent teacher conferences.  The money raised from this will go to help Lisa and Michael Manfroi.  Michael is a 15 year old student from North High School who needs to have specialized eye treatment in Cambridge, MA.  Michael was diagnosed with Intermediate Uveitis, an inflammatory eye disease.  He has had a total of 11 surgeries to treat this.

WINTER COAT DRIVE – Are you busy cleaning out your closets? Are you ready to give up any winter coats that no longer fit? St. Patrick’s Student Council is teaming up with C.O.P.E (Christian Outreach Program of Elkhorn) center and will be doing a winter coat drive.  We will have a box in the school vestibule for dropping off coats.  Our drive will be from Monday, October 21st –through Friday, October 26th.  Please take part in this great opportunity to help others.  St. Patrick’s Church will also be running a coat drive during weekend masses for C.O.P.E.  Information will be in the church bulletin. Student Council Members will be outside during morning drop off to assist in getting the coats into the school. Contact Mary Olson at 289-3071 for any questions.

ROSARY CLUB – Originally started as a time for students to gather together, pray and make rosaries, the Rosary Club consisted of just 7 students.  In 2005, the students’ devotion to the rosary was apparent; by the end of the school year some 35 students (grades K-8) were gathering regularly once a week and dedicating their time to the rosary!

How does this club work?

Rosary Club meets on Mondays from 3:30-4:30.  We have snacks, pray the rosary, and then spend the remainder of the time having fun while making rosaries.  The rosaries we make are given to others or sent away to missions.

For more detailed information about the Rosary Club schedule, to sign up your child, to volunteer, or to donate supplies, please email Denise Ervin, the Rosary Club coordinator, at dervin8@msn.com or call her at, 393-2273.  All parents must make Denise Ervin aware of their child’s interest before Monday morning as to allow time to alert the school staff where your student will be at dismissal.

CHURCH CLEANING HELP NEEDED - Bring your buckets, dust rags, ladders, spouses, kids and cleaning supplies!  We will be sprucing up the church just in time for STEWARDSHIP WEEKEND!  What a great opportunity to spend a little time giving back to the church. Let's get the church looking spic and span! When:  Saturday, October 13th, 1-3 pm.

RSVP:  Nicki Lanzante Home - 991-3949 Cell - 679-5749

GROUNDSKEEPING IS THIS WEEKEND – Please come on Saturday, October 13th, from 9:00 am to Noon to help out.  It is time to prepare the outside of our parish and school for the fall/winter season with various fall cleanup activities such as mowing, laying down ground cover around portable classrooms, trimming bushes, etc.  Please bring necessary tools such as rakes, shovels, trimming equipment, etc.  Any questions, please contact Julie Kaup @ 763-5111 or julie.kaup@cox.net.

KITCHEN HELP SUBSTITUTES ARE NEEDED – St. Patrick's School is looking for people that would be interested in working in a paid position preparing and serving food in the school kitchen during the hours of 7:30 am to 1:30 pm. If interested, please contact the school office @ 289-5407.

RECESS EQUIPMENT – Is your garage due for a cleaning?  Our students are in need more recess equipment.  Thanks to the success of the 3-on-3 tournament, many basketballs have been donated.  Our younger students are in need of the small basketball, footballs, etc.  Our older students are in need of jump ropes, soccer balls and kick balls.  Please drop off any donations to the basket at the Welcome Desk.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING INFORMATION - You can get your Initial Safe Environment Training here at St. Patrick’s Church. This will be available in the Parish Center on Saturday, October 13th from 9am to Noon. 7TH/8TH GRADE PAL FOOTBALL - The Athletic Committee is excited to announce that St Patrick’s School/Parish has been sanctioned to play boys football in the PAL league beginning the fall of 2008. This is a very competitive and well-run football league.  It is made up of 12 Catholic parishes in the Omaha Archdiocese. The team will be made up of boys in the 7th and 8th grades of St. Patrick’s 5 day school and RF program. An organizational meeting has been scheduled for all interested boys and their parents for Tuesday October 16th in the Gym entrance at 7:00 pm.
